That’s the Spot! A Toy Box Tease

September is Sexual Health month.  I am a firm believer that masturbation is a very important component and contributor to my sexual health and well being. Masturbation is a form of self care for me.  Masturbation can also be the first step towards making our sexual debut!  “Sexual Debut” is a term sex educators, researchers, and therapists are using to replace “losing your virginity” and bolster the idea of sexuality as an ongoing journey towards pleasure.  All of us will likely have multiple milestones in the course of our sexual journeys.  These can happen before or after partnered sex, even after the end of a long term relationship.  Today, I thought I would think back to some of the milestones of my own sexual debut.  Not only do I want to dig into my toy box, but also dig into my own sexual history.  Let’s talk about the first real vibrator I remember buying.

I first masturbated with my hands and then by using the shower massager attachment when I was a pre-teen and teenager.  Most of the vibrators I ever saw as a teenager were the novelty “massagers” at Spencers in the mall.  For a lot of people those were their first experience with a sex toy. I skipped that option.  Instead, my first vibrator was the classic “G-gasm Delight” g-spot vibrator from Adam & Eve.  Because I had roommates during college, I was in my early twenties before I bought my first toy.  Adam & Eve was also the first sex toy store that I ever went to.  I remember the intimidating line of dildos of all sizes on the wall, novelty outfits and lingerie, lubes galore, plugs, and, of course, vibrators. There were some that were the rabbit style made famous on Sex and the City.  There were other vibrators of various shapes and in all shades of pastels.  Then I spotted the simple and unobtrusive G-gasm.  This was a sleek and simple design, which appealed to me because it seemed to align with how I was already getting myself off.

Mine was purple, slim 7” long shaft with a 1½” wide bulbous head.  The enlarged head contains a powerful egg vibrator that is good for g-spot, clitoral, or prostate stimulation.  It takes 2 AA batteries.  It also has the bonus of being water resistant, which makes it a fun toy for shower play and also extremely easy to clean.  The base twists to dial up the vibrations to whatever level works for you.  It is very affordable at only about $25.  I think when I bought my first one over 20 years ago it was even less than twenty dollars.

This was a fantastic first vibrator to own.  It wasn’t intimidating and really allowed me to explore more of how my body responded sexually. The downside to any vibrator is when the power runs out.  However the advantage of a battery powered toy is that unlike a chargeable toy, all it takes is a quick change of batteries, and you’re good to go. I definitely considered buying rechargeable batteries, and I certainly kept a supply of AAs on standby!  The downside of a battery powered toy compared to a rechargeable one is the waste and expense of batteries.

This toy was also very fun to use with my husband back when we were dating.  In fact, his reaction to learning I owned the vibrator was one reason that I knew he was a keeper.  Some guys see vibrators or sex toys as competition, but his reaction was one of excitement and curiousity.  He has never been bothered by me masturbating, and he definitely wanted to use it with me in our sex life.  The longer handle gave me and my husband options to use it during sex.  I would put it on my clit for extra stimulation when he was fucking me.  He would also use it on my breasts and nipples as well as my g-spot to get me worked up during foreplay.   The adjustable speed variation was also a great tease for edging.

Another downside to consider is that the hard plastic, while easy to clean, doesn’t have much give. There were times when I would accidentally bruise the area around my clit if I pressed too hard against my pubic mound.  This was especially likely to happen if I was using it during sex in a missionary position.

As is reflected by the price point, this isn’t a durable toy insofar as being able to have it for a long period of time. The motor on the vibrator was effective, but it will eventually cease functioning.  I had to replace the toy at least two times.  But by that point in my sexual journey I started looking for a greater variety and higher quality toys so the motor lasted longer from lack of use.

Final rundown:

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Not intimidating
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to clean
  • Water resistant

Cons:

  • Batteries run out quickly
  • Not a durable motor
  • Potential for bruising

The Adam & Eve G-gasm Delight is a good beginner toy.  It’s an inexpensive way to get some extra stimulation.  It’s not an intimidating toy, and one that is good for solo or partnered play.  I did have to replace the toy more frequently than I would have wanted.  In some ways, this toy reminds me of moving out of your parents house for the first time.  Your cookware might not be the best quality, but it can still make a good meal.  Our final score was a 3 out of 5.  If you have the means to buy a high quality toy, there are definitely better options on the market.  However if you looking for an inexpensive toy to explore and get the job done, this fits the bill.
